Pixel Business

In this blog I documented the journey of finishing a game I started 7 years ago with a friend.

Background Art

I am terrible at mixing colors. To create some kind of harmony in my work I usually choose a limited palette, from which I pick all the colors from.
This time, to mask my incompetence as an artistic choice, I resolved to do all the backgrounds with just 8 colors (+ black and white) Here are some of them:

I started by drwaing everything by hand, but I quicly realized that it would be too time consuming (and painful with my crappy mouse) to do so.
Instead I found some public domain photographs for myself and heavily edited and pixellated them.
All of the characters will be hand drawn by me. They are the center of this product so they deserve more effort put into them.

Artstyle of “The Great Voyage”

Maybe a week before I decided to start working on my old project again, someone on twitter shared screenshots from an old japanese PC-98 game.

(Though apparently from a porn game of all places) The screens inspired me. These games were made with a very limited tech and there were strict limits in ex. how many colors you could use, and how big the images could be. You can see these limitations in the art, but it’s STILL SO DETAILED! I love it so much.
To make my VN somewhat unique from the majority in the market and create consistency withing the art, (and also to save my time in drawing) I decided to imitate this artstyle myself. screen1.png
To achieve this I’m using 8 main colors to do all the backgrounds and pixelart. As there are no hardware limitations today, I’m not so strict with resolution and If the situation needs it, I’ll use whatever colors necessary on the character art.

The Visual Novel I Was Supposed To Make 6 Years Ago

About 6 years ago I became amored with visual novels as a medium and decided to make one. I asked my friend to write a script for me, and I would illustrate and program the game.
However self-precieved lack of skill and teenage anxiety soon made me give up the project altogether. I was depressed and sad that I probably disappointed my friend who worked hard on the script I never used.

Fast forward to one month ago. I had this episode of extreme annoyance, because I would constantly come up with great game ideas in my head but would never stick with anything for very long, thus never finishing anything. I concluded that the best way to get rid of this feeling was to finish some unfinished business in my past.
I chose to rework the visual novel project I started years and years ago.

Back then I was 15. I was full of anxiety over my lack of skill, my lack of motivation, my lack of time...
